Biografie
Pauline Jameson’s long career as both a leading and character actress included several seasons with the Old Vic Company, The Bristol Old Vic and the RSC.

Born in Heacham, Norfolk on June 5, 1920, the daughter of Eric Storrs Jameson and Flora Reed, she wanted to be an actress from an early age. After training at RADA she made her first professional appearance in 1938 at the Colwyn Bay Repertory Company and her London debut at the Q Theatre in 1942 as Beatrice in the drama London W1.

She went on to become a key player with the Old Vic Company (New Theatre 1948-49), appearing as Mrs Marwood in The Way of the World, Maria in Twelfth Night, Dunyasha in The Cherry Orchard and many other roles. She succeeded Peggy Ashcroft as Catherine Sloper in The Heiress (Haymarket 1949). She was Maggie Hobson in Hobson’s Choice (Arts 1952) and later that year joined the Bristol Old Vic Company.

In 1956 she played leading roles at the Shakespeare Festival Theatre, Stratford and in 1964 joined the RSC at the Aldwych Theatre as The Abbess in The Comedy of Errors and Regan in King Lear. She toured Europe and the USSR in both productions. She was Miss Moffatt in a revival of The Corn is Green (Hampstead 1964) and other notable parts included Mrs Sarling in Peter Pan (Albery 1973) and Martha Culver in The Constant Wife (Albery 1975). In the late seventies she joined the Prospect Theatre Company.

Jameson also had a prolific film career, making her debut in 1948 in the Dirk Bogarde drama Esther Waters. Other film credits included The Punch and Judy Man (1962) with Tony Hancock, I Could Go On Singing (1963) with Judy Garland, Doctor in Distress (1963), Sky West and Crooked (1966) and Joseph Andrews (1977). She played Mrs Bancroft in the TV mini-series Lillie (1978) and Mrs Catherick in The Woman in White (1982). In 1996 she was seen in Poirot.

She recorded several classical theatre LPs and starred in several BBC radio dramas.

In her private life she was a highly enthusiastic gardener and once turned down a leading West End role because rehearsals would coincide with a delivery of roses, which would need planting.

In her later years, she devotedly nursed her husband, Wing Commander Leslie Lewington though his declining health, until his death in 2003. In 2004 she suffered a serious traffic accident when a motorcyclist mounted the pavement where she was walking, causing her serious head injuries and making her wheelchair-bound. After rehabilitation, she became a resident at Denville Hall, the actors retirement home in Middlesex. She died on April 8 in Bishops Wood Hospital, aged 86.
